Siblings, house work, and small group

This past weekend my siblings (Andy, 3 years older, Julie 6 years older) came and visited.  They wanted to meet Jan, see the house, and visit with Wendy and me (I hope that last part is true too…. 🙂  ).  We had a great time, sitting and talking like only siblings can.  Wendy’s been around long enough that she gets most of our conversation too, but Andy and I lose her when we start quoting SNL.  “Chocolate Babies?”

Despite having lots of opportunities, I did not get good pictures of me with my siblings, or of them with Jan.  They took some, perhaps they’ll email me some? (hint)  I did get one pretty good shot of Andy with Jan.  Jan clearly likes his uncle:

In house news, we’ve made some progress.  Wendy and I chose colours today, I think we’re pretty happy with them.  We have patches painted on the walls in the foyer, the living room, and the dining room.  I’m going to do some drywall repair and then we’re going to paint!  Following that comes flooring – we’ve decided to go with engineered hard-wood flooring.  It snaps together quickly, and is real hard-wood.  It has “engineered wood” as the base, the part that snaps together and gets nailed down.  The top part is real oak, 3/8 of an inch thick – it can be refinished 3 or 4 times easily, so that seems great.  Additionally, we’re going to do the whole house (upstairs too) because we can get it for 1$ a square foot.  Giddyup.

Apart from that, I made a tiny 5 minute change today that makes the kitchen nicer.  Many of you have seen the lovely scroll-cut piece above our sink:

Not a big deal, but I took it out and cut it square.  I think it looks so much better.

And the keen-of-eye among you will notice another little change:

WOOOHOOOOOOOO!  We bought a dishwasher on Ebay when we found out the one here was a big piece of poooooooo.  It works great.  It was quite an adventure taking the old one out – it was clearly installed by total wankers.  unbelievable.

Tonight was our small group meeting.  It was great – we’re discussing the book “The Great Divorce” by C. S. Lewis.  Joel is totally geeked about this topic, and Wendy did well leading.  It is a good topic, really, and next week we’re going to watch the movie “Shadowlands” together and then discuss it again.  I can’t wait.  We did take a few pictures at group tonight:

Some of you will remember Benjamin from an earlier blog post – he’s about a month older than Jan, and they’re clearly the best of friends.  Joel and Jevon were holding them.  They look like the happy couple, don’t they?

But then David H. and Levi got in the mix.  From the picture I would say that Joel is feeling some jealousy? Some pain?  Perhaps some gas?

I’m watching Detroit and Pittsburgh duke it out for the cup right now (in overtime).  Stupid Detroit.  I really want Pit to win.
