return to the usual

So we have returned from our “vacation” of moving my brother’s family – hard work – and have come home to have a “vacation” from our “vacation” by “indulging” in, oh yes, you guessed it, hard work. Hence all the “”. David and I figured out several years ago that we really aren’t happy unless we are working really hard. I think most people would call that sick or mentally imbalanced, but there you are; it’s just how things are. I think it’s a good thing we are both like this; imagine if one of us wasn’t happy unless slaving away and the other wasn’t happy unless sitting around doing nothing. I think that would create a lot of resent or something. Anyway. We did have a day and a half of sitting around in the Wisconsin Dells thanks to our generous friends, the Lindquists. By sitting around, I mean we went on a long hike/climb (Jan too; pictures forthcoming), I went once and a half and David did it twice. Oh and we canoed about 2 miles in 30 minutes. So even our so-called sitting around was what most people would see as work, but did I mention that’s when we are happy? It was SOO great to get back in a canoe – it has been waaaaay too long. Hiking was fun too. And I actually did do some genuine sitting around and read a book for 2 whole hours!! Goodness!! We sat on the “bank” of a lake and Jan put his legs in. I couldn’t tell if he liked it, but he didn’t scream so that’s something, I suppose. I say “bank” because this part of the country has been really badly flooded recently and so the bank wasn’t exactly where it was supposed to be. Photos will come soon.

But back to my original point. We came home and David got up and went to work bright and early this morning and I went out and, you-know-what, yep, I tackled the vines! I didn’t get tonnes done this time because Jan decided he had enough of sitting around in the stroller (he is going to be just like us – can’t take the sitting around business!) so I kept having to stop and play with him, which is okay too. When we first moved in, we brought with us some hostas from the other house and I just wanted to get them into the ground any old place so they wouldn’t die and we could decide where they look most beautiful at a later time. Well, by “any old place,” I didn’t actually mean in the middle of the path. hostas in path

To defend myself, I will just point out that there was no path there previously, at least not anywhere near as big as it actually is supposed to be. It was completely covered in vines so putting the hostas beside the path seemed reasonable. Now it turns out they really are right there in the middle of things. oh well. I can always move them like I had planned. It is just one more way in which the vines are taunting and defying me. I could hear them sniggering when I realised where the hostas were.
