   Don’t be afraid to use the pacifier. I know there are those kids that get attached to that thing for years but just as many don’t. The nook got us through many a trauma and Rhys/Daelin just stopped using it on their own after about their first birthday. My two cents.

   I’ll share our experience with the nook with both kids, if it makes a difference.

   With Norah, we had a nook in her mouth within a day, and it actually caused some “nipple confusion” that led to some problems breastfeeding. Sounds like you’re not having that problem with Jan, thus far, though. In fairness, Norah had other problems feeding that may or may not have been contributed to by pacifier use.

   With Levi, Rachel made the conscious decision NOT to use a pacifier for a good while so he could have the chance to establish a firm feeding foundation.
   In fact, we used the pacifier for the first time only last night, and Levi’s a month old now. (He had a miserable night, so it really was a blessing and he took to it like gangbusters.) I was actually pushing to use the pacifier earlier, but can totally see the reasons to wait now. What do I know? I just change the diapers.

   So I guess the moral of the story is: go with what Jan wants.

   By the way, we wholeheartedly recommend the book/DVD “The Happiest Baby on the Block” by Dr. Harvey Karp.
